Storia: Il Gabbiano Hotel prende il nome dalla frequentazione della zona, sino ad una quindicina di anni fa, di varie specie di uccelli acquatici, ed in particolare di Gabbiani. Sembra infatti che il proprietario di un locale preesistente nella zona, prima della realizzazione dell’attuale complesso, ne avesse scelto il nome perchè ispirato da un volo di Gabbiani. Il complesso è sito in un tratto di costa tra i più belli del litorale jonico salentino (Marina di Pulsano), incastonato a guardia di una insenatura ampia e riparata dai venti, nonostante l’affaccio diretto sullo Jonio. La località su cui sorge Ë denominata “La Fontana”. Il riferimento è alla sorgente sotterranea che sgorga regolarmente in superficie, versando le acque nel canale sottostante che a sua volta le riversava nel mare. Documenti del secondo Settecento attestano la presenza del “Canale della Fontana”, nel quale venivano sino a non molto tempo fa convogliate le acque ove venivano portate ad abbeverare le giumente della razza Monica dai pascoli adiacenti. Un tipo di allevamento per il quale erano richiesti in particolare buone acque e aria salubre; proprio come l’aria che ancora oggi, nelle calde serate di agosto, si respira nella zona baciata dalle fresche brezze marine.

History: The Gabbiano Hotel takes its name from the area frequentation, until 15 years ago, of various species of water birds, in particular sea gulls. In fact it seems that the owner of a store which was already located in the area, before that the present complex was made, had chosen its name because he had been inspired by a sea gulls' flight. The complex is located in a coast line among the most beautiful beaches of Salento coast (Marina of Pulsano), situated as a guard of a wide bay repaired from winds'attack even if it directly faces Jonio sea. The town where it rises is called "La Fontana". This name is referred to the underground source, regularly flowing on the surface, trowing the waters toward the lower channel, which, on its way, threw them toward sea. Documents of the second part of the 18th century, show the presence of the "Canale della Fontana", where until not much time ago, water was directed and to the same place, cows belonging to Monica race were taken to drink, from the near pastures. A kind of breeding which particularly required good waters and healthy air; just as the air you still today can breath, in the hot August nights, in the area "kissed" by the fresh sea breezes.
